Location: Volcano Iztaccíhuatl , Mexico

In Aztec mythology, Iztaccíhuatl is a princess who falls in love with Popocatépetl, one of her father's warriors. The emperor sends Popocatépetl to war, promising Iztaccíhuatl to him as his wife when he returns. However, Iztaccíhuatl is told that Popocatépetl died in battle and dies of grief. When Popocatépetl returns, he finds Iztaccíhuatl dead and takes her body to a place outside Tenochtitlan, where the gods cover them with snow and turn them into mountains. The two volcanoes are said to represent lovers who were separated by war and catastrophe, but were reunited as immortals in the sky.

These are my favorite outtakes from my time climbing the volcano.
